Millicent Moodie Foundation

In Memory of
Millicent N.E. Moodie

Born in Seaforth, St. Thomas, Millicent N.E. Moodie rose from humble beginnings to become one of her parish's most dedicated public servants. A cruel twist of fate denied her a teaching career — but Millicent dried her tears, crossed the Atlantic and trained as a nurse in England.Returning to Jamaica, she earned a scholarship to the University of the West Indies, rising to become Senior Public Health Nurse for St. Thomas. In 1993 she founded the first practical nursing school in the parish. In 2003 she received the Governor General's Achievement Award.Millicent lived by one mantra: "Aim to help others rise above the difficulties and do what is best for the good of humanity."The Millicent Moodie Foundation was established in 2022 by her daughter Tamika to honor that belief. Every year we award a scholarship to a nursing student in Jamaica — because no dream should die for lack of opportunity.
